USE FULL PHP TAGS!!!!!
alright, i know the login script was written using PHP's short tags (like <? instead of <?php) but make a point of changing this BEFORE you attempt to edit the script. i have seen a bunch of strange errors caused by short tags. these errors will just go away if you use full PHP tags. you should probably make a point of using full PHP tags in all of your files and scripts.
seriously, just do it... i will save you sooo many headaches in the long run.
